The MFCF -> CSCF Split - Equipment

This is the current plan for splitting MFCF equipment and space.

Computing Environments

Networks

We'll need around $22,316.30 for this. Details are in RT #39013.

IST will resist requests for a second Gb link to the core (i.e. one for CS and one for Math) as they believe that the current 2x100MB link isn't even loaded. We'll be creating a private fibre connection between the DC and MC Nortel research labs, so we can consider adding a few more fibres to provide a direct connection from the 'core' Extreme switch in DC3558 to the Cisco 5509, i.e. bypassing cn-exsw01.

Common Servers

print non-print
Math leopold a Netra
CS a Netra backup.math
with perhaps each machine set up as a backup for the other. "non-print" services include The later two are currently provided by
dogen
an aging Sparc V, which will be retired.

Details are in RT #39095. As part of this, Leopold will be upgraded.

Distribution machines will be divided as:

Math pentane
CS debian30 mathmac54
with shared access and use for each group.

As we discover other small servers that haven't been divided (e.g. as mathmac54 wasn't), we'll keep track to be sure that the division is fair.

Fileservers

The plan is to

General Research/Admin Servers

We'll buy PLG2, so that each group gets a 450. Once there are separate file and WWW servers, the creation of a separate CS research/admin environment can proceed. Each group will receive an undeployed Netra, as a server, and to help address differing needs, Math will receive two additional Netras (RT #40092), while CS will receive another switch in exchange. So:

Math CS
pythagoras plg2
theano
beta
goedel
hopper
fe01 fe02
3 Netra's a Netra

We've been trying to decommission "math.uwaterloo.ca" for years now (see RT #38327). It's been agreed that MFCF can own it. CSCF can make new instances as needed of whatever services remain on it.

WWW Proxy

The WWW proxy (httpproxy.math) will be phased out in a controlled manner, i.e. before it breaks. Details are in RT #39283.

Classrooms

Math CS
X11 MC 3008, MC 6080 MC 2037, MC 2061, MC 3022
Windows MC 3006, MC 3009 MC 3004, MC 3005, MC 3027
Macs MC 2062, MC 2063, MC 3003
Graphics MC 6055
Realtime MC 3018
Nortel MC 3007

Nexus

Teaching Environment

The current plan is to

Each group provides base computing resources for their own students, and temporary resources for students taking any of their courses. It's expected that the computing environments of the two groups may eventually differ enough that providing a roving home directory (e.g. as is done for Nexus) would prove impractical.

Since most (all?) CS students will be taking Math courses, and many Math students will be taking CS courses, it's assumed that many students will have both Math and CS accounts. So it might be reasonable to simply give all students accounts in both environments. That implies the need to provide automatic overridable redirection of e-mail for non-base accounts. It has been decided to not provide automatic overridable redirection of WWW pages, since by default, there are no WWW pages to redirect.

This will require arranging for access to the appropriate home directory, which will require some work for Nexus. A problem that likely can't be avoided is non-Math Faculty students taking both CS and Math courses, when sharing of the Nexus labs occur.

Splitting the home directories is likely only practical when the entire student environment is split.

The plan is to

Wincentre (Windows NT Terminal Server Edition)

We'd been waiting for a viable upgrade path from Windows NT TSE to Windows 2000. Details are in RT #36959. The stumbling blocks have been:

We'll be using TEF funds for the upgrade. So it will be conservative; just one production (large) server each, and one small test machine. Once we've made that work, we can consider turning off the existing service, and expanding the new service. Details are in RT #39146.

The Self-Serve Printers

They're not practical to divide, so we'll share for now.

Hardware Lab/Storeroom

CS will need some space in the hardware lab and storeroom (MC3026) room to efficiently service the CS classrooms/labs. The size of the lab will undoubtedly decrease.

The tentative yet to be approved plan is to

Yet to be determined:

Security System

Let's not worry about the general room system now, given that CS rooms will migrate to the DC, and that dealing with alarms is often a machine room service, and machine room services (i.e. Chris's time) are already divided.

However given our increase in security concerns/systems since the above was decided, it would seem that each side should have someone to deal with the new systems (e.g. the card swipes, and the logging system). Arthur's an obvious choice for CS, and Chris is a reasonable choice for Math.

Backups

Legato Backups (of UNIX systems)

MFCF will get out of the Legato backup business in favour of paying IST to do it. So the new jukebox and backup.math will go to CS, who, for at least this round, will do their own backups.

Retrospect backups of Macs and PCs

The CSCF secondment of a position to MFCF notes that MFCF will continue to "manage Retrospect backups".

Existing Windows clients of Retrospect will move, depending upon the owner (see RT #40375).

CS doesn't currently plan to use Retrospect, so Legato is presumably the only option.

Math machines will be backed up by IST. Since IST does both Legato and Retrospect backups, there's the option of having them use either. However it's been observed that the Legato user interface is better than Retrospect's, so it might be a better choice, albeit a more expensive one. Determining the best choice will likely require understanding who will be paying for what, and whether they're willing to pay the extra.

Modem Pool

MFCF plans to decommission it. CSCF has decided to do the same, although there is still some debate about whether CS should subsidize network access from home for CS people.

The intent is to decommission it by May 1st. Details are in RT #39297.

Presentation Aids

Buy another projector. Buy another digital camera if needed.
