ICR promotes industrial interaction and enhances the research environment for computer researchers at the University of Waterloo. ICR includes researchers from eight academic departments within four faculties, most notably the School of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

ICR has over 150 members who are either individual members and/or members of the fifteen groups federated with ICR.

Much of the research ongoing in ICR federated groups has formed or aided spin-off companies in Waterloo or Toronto, including:

• Certicom Corporation (data encryption systems)
• Dalsa Inc. (CCD cameras and image sensors)
• Open Text Corporation (enterprise content management)
• Sirific Wireless (RF chip technology)
• Sybase Canada (embedded databases enabling the unwired enterprise)
• Maplesoft Corporation (symbolic mathematics software)
