Winter 2016, Introduction to the Theory of Computation

Course material is conveyed through lectures and readings (from the textbook as well as supplementary materials), reinforced in problem sessions and assignments, and assessed in two term tests and final exam. Use the links above for more details on the various aspects.

Lectures are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30-12:50 in MC 4040.

Announcements:

8 April: Assignment 4 has been marked, and can be picked up at the end of the exam. Please make sure that all marking issues are resolved during TA office hours on Monday, April 11, 1:30-3:30.

4 April: Assignment 4 model solutions are now available.

31 March: The solutions to problem session 4 are now available.

31 March: Some of you may have noticed a new location for the assignment box for just this assignment. As this was potentially confusing, I have asked for it to be moved back. All assignments found in either of the boxes at the time of the move will be all placed in the correct box.

31 March: Exam period office hours will be Monday, April 4 2:00-4:00 and Thursday, April 7, 1:00-3:00.

28 March: The resource on Turing machines has been augmented to include a sketch of the example of determining composites.

21 March: Please bring your device of choice to class on Thursday, March 31 for course evaluations during class time.

21 March: Please bring your suggestions of office hours for the week of April 4 to class on Thursday, March 24.

16 March: Test 2 model solutions are now available.

16 March: Question 3a in Assignment 3 was marked out of 5 instead of 8 due to an inconsistency between the marking scheme and assignment. Consequently, all marks will be increased by 3.

4 March: The solutions to problem session 3 are now available.

3 March: Assignment 4 has been posted.

18 February: Test 1 model solutions are now available.

9 February: Assignment 2 model solutions are now available.

8 February: The incorrect image appeared as the second-to-last image in the solution of Question 3 in the solutions to problem session 2. The correct image is now in place.

5 February: The solutions to problem session 2 are now available.

4 February: The resource "Equivalence of languages" had an erroneous rule in the grammar G for example 6; a corrected handout is now available.

4 February: Assignment 1 model solutions are now available.

4 February: Note: There will be no office hours held during reading week.

4 February: Information on the contrapositive of the pumping lemma has been posted under "Resources".

29 January: An error in the statement of Assignment 2, Question 4, part (a) has been fixed. The two uses of u have been replaced by w.

21 January: Assignments are to be handed into the drop boxes on the 4th floor of MC, not the 3rd floor as previously stated.

21 January: All future problem sessions will be held on Thursdays, 4:30-5:30, in RCH 308.
